Wandering/Vulnerable Person Registry
The Town of Chester Police Department is now offering a voluntary registry for individuals who are prone to wandering or belong to vulnerable populations. This includes, but is not limited to, people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, traumatic brain injury, or any other special needs, physical disabilities, or mental health conditions. The program is designed to collect important information from family members or caregivers to assist in emergencies. This will enable officers to respond quickly and effectively to any incidents that may arise. The goal is to enhance community safety, improve officer response, streamline operations, and provide peace of mind to families with loved ones at risk of wandering.
The registry will help our department access critical information to identify and assist your loved one if they leave their residence and come into contact with law enforcement. Quick access to this information is vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved while minimizing unnecessary stress during such events.
Participation in the program is entirely voluntary. All information provided will be securely stored at the Police Department and will only be used when necessary to locate or identify a missing or wandering individual.
Safe Me Sticker Program
When joining the registry, those with Autism/Special Needs will also receive a “Safe Me” sticker. This sticker should be placed on vehicles, either on the driver’s side window or near the registration. The sticker has a QR code on it that first responders can scan to call the Town of Chester Police Department. The first responder can then provide the “safe me” number on the sticker to the Town of Chester PD, which will allow them access to helpful information on anyone in the car who has special needs and is unable to communicate/advocate for themselves.
How it works:
- Each family will receive a sticker with a Safe Me number.
- The sticker should be placed on the driver’s side window or near the vehicle registration and inspection number.
- By scanning the QR code, first responders will be connected with the Town of Chester Police Department.
- First responders can provide the Safe Me number to obtain information about the special needs, vulnerable, or medically fragile individual.
- The Town of Chester Police Department will then provide details about the individual, as well as their emergency contact.
